VENUE & ATTIRE
What should I expect at the venue?
Climbing Cloud Ranch is a hilltop property on McCray Mountain, surrounded by forests and open meadows. It’s a private mountain property in the midst of long-term ecological restoration following the 2020 Lightning Complex Fire. Expect natural terrain, beautiful views, and designated event spaces designed to be comfortable and welcoming.
For everyone’s safety, please remain on marked pathways and within designated event areas. Outside these areas the landscape is undeveloped and may include steep slopes, uneven ground, hidden trip hazards, wildlife (including ticks), and limited visibility that can make it easy to get hurt or lost.
What’s the dress code?
We recommend Outdoor Semi-Formal attire or Rustic Fabulous, with comfortable, stable shoes for natural terrain. Layers encouraged for cool April evenings. Children are invited to arrive in their most fabulous, fun, and fearless outfit of choice.
What if it rains?
April in Sonoma can bring light spring showers — it’s part of what keeps the ranch so green and full of life. We will have tented and covered areas, but there may still be some exposure to the elements.
Rain is completely manageable here, and we’ll embrace whatever nature brings.
(And the photos are often spectacular!)
Will the ceremony and reception be on grass or uneven terrain?
Yes. Both events take place outdoors on a working ranch with natural terrain (grass, pathways, compacted gravel). Please wear shoes that are comfortable and stable.
Will there be restrooms at the ranch?
Yes — there will be clean, comfortable restroom facilities available near the main event areas.
Is the event pet-friendly?
Unfortunately no — the ranch is not able to accommodate pets for safety and wildlife reasons.
Will the ceremony be indoors or outdoors?
The ceremony takes place outdoors under open sky, with a portion of the seating partially covered for shade or light weather. You’ll be surrounded by redwoods and mountain views.
Is the reception indoors or outdoors?
The reception will be held in a beautiful tented structure on the property. It’s fully sheltered, with heating and lighting as needed, while still feeling connected to the landscape.
Are guests allowed to explore the ranch?
We ask that guests stay within marked pathways and designated event areas. Much of the surrounding land is undeveloped wilderness and active restoration area, with steep hillsides, uneven footing, and limited visibility. Staying on marked paths helps keep everyone safe and protects the land. Please do not attempt to “shortcut” through unmarked areas. Staff will be on hand to help guide guests safely.
Is the venue accessible?
Climbing Cloud Ranch is a natural, outdoor mountain property. While event areas and pathways are clearly marked and designed for guest use, the terrain is uneven and not fully ADA-accessible. Guests should expect gravel paths, natural ground surfaces, and gentle slopes. If you have specific mobility needs, please reach out in advance and we’ll do our best to help.
Is there wildlife?
The ranch is home to foxes, deer, birds, and other forest neighbors. They typically keep their distance, but expect the occasional adorable sighting.
Will there be lighting after dark?
Yes. Main pathways and event areas will be lit. Still, the forest becomes very dark at night, so please stay within the marked areas.
Is it safe for children?
Little adventurers are welcome! But they must be supervised at all times. The property includes steep terrain and natural hazards outside event areas, and there are no barriers beyond designated spaces.
Is seating provided for the whole event?
Yes. There will be seating for the ceremony, dinner, and lounge-style areas available throughout the evening.
Will there be bugs?
Spring in the redwoods is generally mild for insects, but we’ll have bug spray available just in case.
Should I bring anything?
We recommend bringing a light layer for the evening and wearing comfortable shoes suitable for outdoor terrain. Nothing else is needed.
Will there be smoking areas?
Due to fire safety regulations, smoking and vaping are not permitted except in a small designated area near the event entrance.
Why are there restricted areas?
Climbing Cloud Ranch is undergoing long-term ecological restoration following the 2020 Lightning Complex Fire. Restricted areas protect sensitive habitat and help ensure guest safety in steep or unstable terrain.
